Robert M. Menke

Founder and Director, Bankers Insurance Group

40 years ago a young entrepreneur named Bob celebrated his birthday by investing the proceeds of a real estate transaction into what was then known as Bankers Fire and Casualty Company to launch a new firm, Bankers Insurance Company. Many business leaders questioned the move. But Bob, as he has demonstrated throughout his life, remained undeterred. Per the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Bankers Insurance Company commenced business on June 11, 1976. Our first home stood on 34th Street in St. Petersburg.

In the four decades since, the small insurance firm developed into one of the largest private companies in Tampa Bay, surviving five U.S. recessions, the costliest hurricane in U.S. history (Katrina – $108 billion in damages in 2005), and several overhauls of insurance legislation, including flood insurance in 2012. Through all of these economic headwinds, Bankers Insurance has persevered, personifying the dogged determination of its founder.

Bob has been the Chairman of Bankers Insurance Group since 1977. His insurance career spans 35 years and encompasses all phases of the business, from agent to corporate executive. He has also been a real estate broker and developer since his junior year in college, and has been actively involved in banking. He was the primary organizer of the Bank of Florida in St. Petersburg and its parent, the Bank of Florida Corporation, which was later acquired by SouthTrust Banking Corporation. In addition to his other responsibilities at Bankers, he is also Chairman of the Board of First Community Bank of America.

In 1986, he was honored as “Insurance Man of the Year” by the Florida Association of Domestic Insurance Companies.
Bob has been involved in a wide range of local and national organizations. In 2008, he was inducted into the Hall of Distinction of St. Petersburg College for his significant contributions.

The BFC umbrella now encompasses the continental U.S. with customers from coast to coast. None of this could have been possible without the gamble a young entrepreneur took in 1976 and the associates who continue to make his dream a reality.
